“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” -Helen Keller
I employ a humanistic approach that emphasizes autonomy and promotes self-actualization. I accomplish this by using a client-centered, existential perspective that helps clients identify and understand their values, strengths, purpose in life, and how they find meaning in possible suffering. Clients know themselves more than anyone and understand how to live life fully through congruence and fulfilling behaviors; they may just need some help navigating their journey in a warm, safe, supported, therapeutic environment. It is from this that people understand what motivates them, what keeps them moving forward, and what instills resilience.
Prior to working at Therapy Today, I graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a master’s in clinical mental health counseling. I have a year of experience working as an intern therapist at Eastern Michigan University, helping community members and college students. I also have 2 years of experience as a behavior technician, applying Applied Behavior Analysis to children and teenagers with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
In addition to being a therapist, I am a former collegiate cross-country and track athlete. This experience transformed my life and has taught me many lessons on resilience, suffering, and perseverance, which are themes I focus on in therapy. I have carried this experience with me and am still an avid runner and weightlifter. In addition, I believe that physical health is just as important as mental health; these two influence each other and can support one another during the therapeutic process and in life.
