Safety and trust are foundational to therapy. As a clinical social worker, using the problem-solving model, my primary interest is what you are identifying as your problems and what you are identifying as your goals for therapy work. This implies that all clients are potential change agents in their lives and that is one of the resources to bring to the therapy setting. Family trauma and relationship trauma, without a sense of safety and trust with your therapist, are difficult to negotiate to getting to positive outcomes. After an initial getting to know you, I am keen to get to the target behaviors that are on your agenda for change.
I started in the field in 1978 at a group home for elementary aged emotionally disturbed children. I went on from there to working with adolescent substance abuse, with a perspective of family systems theory. I have worked with adult addicts-in-recovery in a number of settings. I am comfortable working with a number of symptom presentations like addiction, parental abuse, parental alcoholism, bullying, and child and teen behavioral disorders/academic problems/failures.
